What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter or Hasya Yoga is the practice of using yogic breathing techniques and "pretended" laughter in a group. Because of the group dynamic, something happens: the laughter becomes real!

It was developed by Dr. Madan Kataria in India and now there are over 5,000 clubs worldwide. For more information about the international laughter movement go to www.laughteryoga.org

Who runs Daylesford Laugh Club ?

We have two Certified Laughter Leaders, Shanti Portia and Greg "Arjuna" Govinda. They give their time voluntarily so that Laugh Club can remain free and accessible to everyone. Contact us if you wish to help out in any capacity.

What happens in a Laughter session?

A combination of light stretching, deep breathing and laughter, lead by an anchor person. Each session finishes with sending thoughts of peace into the world.
A typical session can include:

rhythmic clapping
ho ho ha ha ha chanting
deep breathing
laughter techniques: yogic (loosely based on different yoga postures), playful (encourages participants to be more open and playful), and value based (where special meaning is attached to the exercise, developing a positive attitude)

How can people laugh without jokes?

Laughter is contagious. It's all in the eye contact with others in the group. Think of a time at school when you couldn't stop laughing - looking at someone else always made it worse (except in laughter groups you won't be told off - you'll be encouraged!).
